Several movies have been staying in the “Movies” folder of my laptop for a long long time but I haven’t gotten around to watching them. Finally I watched a few of them the past week of which two have touched me enough to share them with you!
The first one is a Malayalam movie. For those of you out of India, Malayalam is a South Indian regional language spoken widely in the state of Kerala. Now for a little tidbit, there are as many as 122 major languages and 1599 other languages in India.(Source: Wikipedia) Can you even believe that?! In a single country!!
The movie is titled “Usthad Hotel”. It’s a beautiful feeling to discover the purpose of our lives. A young man Faizal trained as a chef at one of Switzerland’s finest institutions comes back to India after graduating. All through his college Faizal made his dad believe that he was actually studying hotel management. He has a job offer from London but things go spiraling down when his dad finds out that he was really a chef and stops him from going to London because he views cooking as an inferior job. Agitated, Faizal leaves home to go stay with his grandfather for a while. His grandfather owns a hotel named “Usthad hotel.” Faizal’s experiences from then on make a major part of the film. He goes on to learn that we have to give, more than receive. This movie also mentions the true story of Narayanan Krishnan and his service to the homeless. You MUST watch this video to know what I am talking about.
The next one is an English movie “Martian Child”. Now this a really beautiful movie about the developing of the bond between a father and his newly adopted son. David Gordon is a science fiction novelist who has been recently widowed. He and his wife were planning to adopt a child and with her sudden loss, David decides not to go ahead with the adoption. Two years later, he rethinks the idea when he sees Dennis who is a weirdo just like he used to be as a kid. Dennis actually believes that he is from Mars and behaves so. David gives Dennis a place in his home and his heart. The journey begins there and both of them end up finding someone to love and to hold dear. There were several parts of the movie that absolutely warmed my heart. At one point when David is upset, Dennis reaches out for David’s hand and at the same moment, David puts his hand into his pocket. (He didn’t see Dennis reach out, ofcourse) That made me go “Aww..no..”
Sometimes we forget that children have just arrived on the earth. They are a little like aliens, coming into beings as bundles of energy and pure potential, here on some exploratory mission and they are just trying to learn what it means to be human. For some reason Dennis and I reached out into the universe and found each other, Never really know how or why. And discovered that I can love an alien and he can love a creature. And thats weird enough for both of us.
While the first one is about reaching out to the society, the second one is about reaching out and welcoming a new relationship. I recommend that you watch both of them! 🙂
